Story set on a station near Melbourne and a villa also close to the city, of love between the children of fathers who had been enemies since youth. The miscarriage of this love drives Robert Hollington to drink and gamble and nearly ruin his family, and Laura Beverley to vow never to marry. Robert's arrest for attempted murder of Mr Beverley eventually reveals skullduggery. (PB)
