Reviewing the two volumes of Lee Kuan Yew's memoirs, The Singapore Story (1998) and From Third World to First - the Singapore Story 1965-2000 (2000), and noting the pivotal role Lee has played in the building of the nation, Haskell observes a theme of protest and internationalism in the writing of the younger generation of Singaporean poets; a rejection of the authoritarianism with which Singapore has been governed.
