Harris tracks the origin and progress of the Ern Malley Hoax beginning with the letters sent to him by Malley's sister, 'Ethel Malley', through the media discovery of the deception, the trial on indecency charges, the response to the hoax from the United Kingdom and the USA and, finally, a 1960 ABC radio programme re-capping the affair.

Notes

  • This introduction includes transcripts of: the two letters sent to Harris by 'Ethel Malley', the statement provided to Fact newspaper by James McAuley and Harold Stewart that explained the hoax and a letter sent to Harris by the English poet and critic, Sir Herbert Read.

    Also included, under the sub-title The Protagonists, are excerpts from the 1960 ABC radio documentary prepared by John Thompson. The excerpts consist of quotes from Barrie Reid, J. I. M. Stewart, John Reed, Brian Elliott, Herbert Read, James McAuley, Harold Stewart, Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker.
