Notes

  • Epigraph: 'They change their sky, not their mind, who scour across the sea.' Horace, Epistles I. xi.27
  • Dedication: For our nieces and nephews and their children.
  • Author note: This story arranged in three parts depicts three stages in the early life of William Howe Irving, the years 1845 - 1885. Other historical characters represented are members of connections of the families Howe, Armstrong (Scotland), Irving, Corser, King and Armstrong (Ireland). The O'Connell group is a fictional introduction allowing greater scope in dialogue and incident, a focusing unit to sharpen the scene and the central figures. Story-readers who find a tediousness in retrospect may leave the introductory chapters of Parts Two and Three - others whose interest is personal and historical, will find in those pages a part of their heritage.
