Notes

  • Epigraph: 'Fly, envious Time, till thou run out thy race.' - John Milton.
  • Dedication: To the memory of Agnes Sheridan Irving 1871 - 1961.
  • Author note: In this story authentic records of the Howe and Irving families include daily affairs, pastoral and business pursuits, social life, original correspondence and true family relationships with the exception of the fictional character Gypsy. ... The other persons depicted are imaginary but names of prominent people of the time occur incidentally.
  • From 'Acknowedgments': The historical framework of this story, prompted by the existence of a number of family letters and portraits, owes much to members of both families concerned who have searched their cupboards and their memories.
