Notes

  • This fragment, which only came to light in the nineteen seventies, is, apart from the works of Hesiod and Pindar, one of the longest consecutive works of the archaic period (c700-500 BC) extant. It deals with an encounter between Archilochus and a girl who in my view is undoubtedly Neobule's sister. The beginning is missing. For the text see H.D. Rankin, Archilochus of Paros, New Jersey, 1977, pp. 68-71.
  • Adapted from the Greek of Archilochus.
