The story of Martin M'Tailing, a failed businessman who begins investing in mining shares after he receives a legacy from his uncle. Martin is successful for a time, and he marries his landlady, the widow Mrs. Carney. Fluctuations in the mining sharemarket cause failure again; although Martin himself is honest, unscrupulous businessmen contribute to his ruin. Despite this failure, domestic happiness ultimately prevails.
