Gregory Blaxland (1778–1853), agriculturalist and wine maker, with William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson, conducted a successful exploration of the Blue Mountains in 1813. In 1823 Blaxland published his journal, stating that the interest of his friends was his motivation for publication. The journal was written in the third person, and chronicles the landscape, geography, and the specificities of their expedition. This second edition was been reprinted by Blaxland's son, John, in 1870, in order to perpetuate the memory of the exploration as the original edition is "no longer to be had."
