Romance at secluded Beechworth, with overtones of a fairy tale. Alice flees her prospective stepmother to care for the invalid Mrs Lawrence who will not let sunshine into her house and neglects her gardens because of her life's sufferings. Alice tempts her back to life and nurtures a friendship with the footman and the gardener - only to find these brothers are actually Mrs Lawrence's banished sons. Love follows. Light; unlikely.
