Account of a children's hospital ward, and one particular patient, Toddy, who despite being only 18 months old is able to charm everyone and command their attention.
In this prose piece the author criticises the view that society should focus on helping adults overcome hardship, and argues that we must take care of children and put resources into children's homes and hospitals so that they can grow up to be healthy and functional adults.
