Class valedictorian Ernest Thorp dies after giving the speech at the graduation ceremony in his mother's arms. He succumbed to overwork and privation from the years of self-imposed isolation following the loss of his family's fortune and his separation from the rich girl he had nobly loved. Insubstantial.
