19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
German adventurer Friedrich Gerstaecker's (1816-1872) Narrative of a Journey Round the World detailed his travel to South America, the Pacific Islands, Australia and Asia. Divided into three volumes, the descriptions of Australia were chronicled in the conclusion of Volume 2 and the beginning of Volume 3. The first-person narrative was conversational in tone as Gerstaecker described his fellow travellers and the people he encountered during his journey. Gerstaecker visited Australia, describing Sydney, the Royal Mail from Sydney to Albury, Adelaide, and the local colonists and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples he encountered.
