Romance (probably US). A 30 year-old woman, engaged to a poor doctor a year younger than herself, takes an orphaned girl into her home. She becomes convinced that the doctor loves the girl and so breaks off the engagement ... Tale of pride and misunderstanding; low-key. (PB)

An English actor falls in love with an American girl in her home town of Stratford but her mother won't allow them to marry. Anecdote counselling care in checking bills before paying them. (PB)
(p. 312)
Better Rub Than Rust, King Cole , single work short story

He takes a job at a farm near Lilydale and quickly gains promotion and the love of his manager's daughter. She will not marry him until the mystery shrouding her father's name is cleared ... Subject and locale more interesting than style. Mystery is the usual false imputation of murder in Ireland in the manager's youth. (PB)
(p. 313-317)

Romance set in Ireland. An Englishman buys an Irish hunting estate and inadvertantly a poor widow is turned out of her house. Lover's misunderstandings follow as prying gossips cause trouble until all is pleasantly resolved. Light; patchy in parts. (PB)
(p. 320-323)
