AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'The stories collected in this book come from some of the Mowanjum people. Many of them have been handed down for generations in oral form, and have never before been written down. They comprise a fascinating mixture of Dreamtime stories, personal reminiscence, and descriptions of day-to-day living.' Source: Dust jacket.

Notes

  • 'Mowanjum is a small Aboriginal community situated near Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It's people come from three tribes: the Worora, the Ngarinjin and the Wunambul, all related, but each with its own specific tribal territories and sacred places. In 1951 the three tribes made history when they decided to live as one people at Wotjulum, their first united settlement. Mowanjum, to which they moved in 1956 when Wotjulum proved inadequate, was intended to be their final home. The name "Mowanjum" means "settled at last".' Source: Dust jacket.
