Eight students, Simon Chalmers, Naomi Druce, Sophie Gebhart, Michaela Manwaring, Sean Milne, Campbell Moody, Tim Neal and Andrew Rutherford argued and decided from the 1983 shortlisted books a winner and three runners-up for the Book of the Year Award. Their report was compiled before the announcement of the Children's Book Council of Australia's 1983 winners.
