'In 1890 a strange child custody case came before the court. Against all odds a tiny child was wrenched from the wreckage of the British East India vessel, Quetta, which struck rocks and sank, killing 130 in three horrific minutes. A young steward, Mutassa Clarke, heard the girl's cries and rescued her, calling her Quetta. But who is she? Her name and parental background, indeed her very presence on the Quetta, are a mystery. And who will adopt Quetta - the old captain, or the young man who plucked her so miraculously from the ship's debris?'
