Notes

  • Author's/editor's note: "The earlier parts of this narrative poem, which consists of richly coloured scenes of mediaeval life, were published in Art in Australia; the first described Joan's vision of Michael with the order "Get thee to Chinon, saith the Lord"; the second, a love-episode between Queen Isabelle and the Duke of Orleans; the third, the slaying of Orleans in an ambush led by Burgundy; this episode, which Vision has the good fortune to obtain, as far as it is yet written, returns to the country-side in the delightful quiet soliloquising of the fisherman and the tale of the lover who has lost his love-token. Though the scene is not completed, this portion stands as it is as a charming pastoral fragment."
