This television adaptation of an Elizabeth Jolley short story is told from the perspective of a confused teenage girl who lives with her mother, Ann Sweeney, and delinquent brother in suburban Sydney. Ann's job as a cleaner in a luxury complex enables her to let her friends stay in the apartments when the owners are on holiday, allowing them to briefly experience the life of the rich. However, the social whirl that this creates cannot distract her from the unresolved issues in her life, namely her children and her stubborn father, who won't give up his farm despite ongoing health problems. When he dies, she inherits the farm but, in order to save it from being sold to the mining company that employed her father, she has to sell her own house to the country. Ann then has to find some ingenious way to carry out her father's wish that there be one last crop.
