George Dunderdale (1822-1903), a government officer, tells a story of Australian pioneering in The Book of the Bush, also published with the title Australian Bush Tales. Written in his later life, it was presented as a collection of sardonic reminiscences. In a sensational narrative, Dunderdale described the depraved convicts, the perceived vanishing Aboriginal race, gold digging, and included the tale of "Macdonald of Glengarry" who attempted to set up a fiefdom in outback Australia. This work is illustrated by J. Macfarlane.
