The program follows the preparations for the first production of the Australian opera Summer of the seventeenth doll, from six months before opening night to opening night itself. Interviews are conducted with composer Richard Mills, director Richard Wherrett, librettist Peter Goldsworthy, author of the original play Ray Lawler, designer Brian Thomson, wardrobe designer Julie Lynch, and performers Gillian Sullivan, Gary Rowley, Elizabeth Campbell, Barry Ryan, Eilene Hannan and Natalie Jones.

Each summer Barney ritualistically presents his girl Olive, a barmaid with a kewpie doll. But the seventeenth summer is different; time has begun to take its toll. The themes of faded dreams, idealism, disillusionment and the determination to live bring out a quintessential Australian boisterous flavour while portraying what happens when the values of the outback hero conflict with urban domesticity.
