Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Fanny L. Rains provides a conversational travel narrative in By Land and Ocean. It begins with her departure from England, to Australia, a journey undertaken without a maid. Established with the title page quote "neither rashly nor timidly," Rains noted that her journey was without thrilling incidents or wonderful adventures. Rather, she published her narrative to show the enjoyment a lone damsel can experience on a global tour. In Australia, Rains travelled to Adelaide, describing her daily instances, as well as detailing the city, climate, and environment. She briefly stayed in Melbourne before travelling to Sydney and New South Wales (via New Zealand), briefly describing both these cities. Rains continued her voyage home, travelling through Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and America.
