AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Just as she has become resigned to spinsterhood [Dorothy Baisey] marries lusty Tim Davison, owner of a sheep station. The difficulties of her marriage are outweighed by a growing love for the stark beauty of Carrawarra, the station which she eventually has to manage. Disillusioned by her children, it seems that nothing else remains...until the dawn of a new hope arises in her grand-daughter Stevie, who comes like the 'maiden phoenix' out of the ashes of the past to be the Bird of Wonder.' Notes

  • Dedication: To Jack and Michael, with love.
  • Epigraph:
Nor shall this peace sleep with her; but as when
The bird of wonder dies, the maiden phoenix,
    Her ashes new-create another heir
As great in admiration as herself.
