Notes

  • This poem refers to Charles Gray, a member of the 1860-1861 Burke and Wills expedition party, who died of dysentary at a now unknown location in South Australia, in April 1861. Whilst Kendall's poem romanticises Gray's death, at the time he had in fact fallen out with expedition leader Burke, who some weeks beforehand, had severely beaten him for stealing rations.
