Notes

  • Austrian poet Georg Trakl , who committed suicide in 1914 at the age of 27, left just over one hundred poems written between 1912 and his death. His work is widely acknowledged as an important influence on the poetry of James McAuley. "In 1973 McAuley translated eighteen of Trakl's poems and walked in Trakl's footsteps in Innsbruck and Salzburg ... [these poems] are a record of this pilgimage" (Leonie Kramer, ed., James McAuley: Poetry, Essays and Personal Commentary).

Within each section the poetry is chronologically arranged; the prose is introduced in such a way as to suggest the relationship between McAuley's poetic preoccupations and his critical and intellectual position.'
