Notes

  • Strutton's book was one of the sources for Thomas Keneally's Season in Purgatory, and Keneally's use of similar material led to a controversy about plagiarism which resulted in an out-of-court settlement (for details see Pierce, Australian Melodramas, 15-17).
  • Dedication: To Jim Rickett: The most Terrible Friend of all.
  • In an Author's Note, Strutton wrote that this is a true story. In other sources he has also referred to the book as non-fiction. The book was written in the first person and has other qualities of fiction.
