One day in the late twentieth century, Lelasari discovers that her daughter Narida is going deaf, just as her own sister Ita had. The deafness, and lack of sons in their family, is the result of a curse placed on Lelasari's grandfather, Doctor Dahlan Sardi. Lelasari begins to visit Mbah Siti, who placed the curse, in hopes of having the curse lifted.
