19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Mrs Dominic Daly (Harriet Willes Douglas 1851-1927) wrote Digging, Squatting, and Pioneering Life in the Northern Territory of South Australia to chronicle the events of her life and her experiences of Northern Australia from 1870 to 1877. Moving chiefly between Port Darwin and Brisbane, Adelaide, and Western Australia, Daly's travels were punctuated with references to Indigenous populations, "alligators and snakes," the gold diggings and other mineral riches of the colonies, and the telegraph line. Arranged chronologically, Daly's narrative was written in the first person in an accessible, yet formal, style. The author’s husband—Dominic James Daly (1834-1910)—also published works on law and other subjects.
