Notes

  • In his introduction to the 1999 Five Islands Press publication, editor John Senczuk records that Mates was based on a story by Esson's half brother Frank Brown. Senczuk writes : 'It is... clear from [his wife] Hilda's correspondence that Mates, which appeared under Frank's name, was Louis' reworking of an original scenario by his half-brother and the extent manuscript reveals that both collaborated on the version performed by the Pioneer Players: "It was one of Louis' that was handed over to Frank Brown to touch up as Louis didn't want his name on the programme"' (p12).

Production Details

  • First performed by the Pioneer Players at the Playhouse on 16 August 1923. Directed by George Dawe.
