An adventure story, largely concerned with pirates, that begins with George Humboldt running away from the Sydney shop in which he works as an assistant, with a view to making his fortune on the goldfields. He soon falls in with – and then afoul of – 'Red' Haggard, a seaman with a fearsome reputation, and his crew.
