Dedication: This story, the writing of which has brought back to me many pleasant memories of the days that have gone, days when the mountains, the rivers, the bush and the farm lands were as familiar to me as are the city pavements to-day, is dedicated with the affection that only mateship can inspire, to Ben Hepworth, of East Maitland and Reg. Jones of Morpeth.
As children and as young men, we three were as close as one. Together we ranged the hills, the plains and the bush. Those were carefree, joyous days, during which each of us had deeply ingrained in him a love of open spaces which nothing on earth can remove. We were the children of yesterday. I offer this saga of Joey, the grey kangaroo, to the children of to-day, Ben's children, Reg's children and my children, and the children of Australia.
