AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The anthropologist Peter Lucich conducted fieldwork at Mowanjum Presbyterian Mission in the Kimberley region of Western Australia between 1963 and 1964. Elkin Umbagai told the children's dreaming stories that Lucich recorded. Each chapter of this book is devoted to a single story which appears in several versions :

    • The storyteller's version in her language transcribed by Lucich, using symbols derived from the International Phonetic Alphabet. Umbagi's direct English translation appears underneath the Worora words.
    • Luchich's free translation using English grammatical structure.
    • Umbagi's English language version of the story if it was recorded by Lucich.
