It originated when a Brisbane journalist, Keith Bean, bought the news rights of Chapman's expedition to The Granites. Bean, who went into hospital with fever, 400 miles in the interior, sent on 'Harry' James to the desert. Both went independently to London, met accidentally and collaborated on 'The Golden Goose.'

1935
Was reported to have been played in 'a suburban theatre' in 1935 ('Music and Drama', Sydney Morning Herald, 29 February 1936, p.). This performance has not been traced definitively, but some Australian sources suggest a 1935 performance at the Croydon Theatre, with Pat Hanna in the lead role ('Australian Artists Abroad', Courier-Mail, 9 January 1936, p.12).
1936
Opened on Monday 6 January 1936, at the Embassy Theatre, London.
Cast members included Australian actress Coral Brown, as well as Maragretta Scott, Margaret Watson, Ernest Jay, Brember Wills, Paul Farrell, Margaret Carter, Michael Shepley, Anthony Shaw, Tony Quinn, Will Leighton, and James Craven.
(Some Australian sources also suggest that Pat Hanna was in the cast of the 1936 production, but his name is not mention in the London Times cast list, nor is he mentioned in every Australian news report.)
