'Note on Additional Australian Poems' (p.8): The poems by Australian writers which have been added to the Australian edition of The Poets' Harvest were chosen in consultation with a number of people in Australia who wished to have made available for reading, along with the English poets' 'harvest of that quiet eye', some poetry representative of present day poets of their own country; in particular of Australian writing of a newer age than that of Lawson and Banjo Paterson. For this reason the poets here represented have all, in some fashion, a claim to belong to the modern poetic tradition, but the section should not, of course, be regarded as being representative of Australian contemporary verse as a whole and the poems should be read with reference to the general sections of the anthology and not as parts of a section complete in itself...The growing interest in Australian tradition as a basis for literary expression is exemplified by the beautiful aboriginal poetry of James Devaney, by Rex Ingamells, Flexmore Hudson and Russel Ward, yet celtic inspiration is apparent in Devaney's work and the themes and styles of Hugh Mccrae, Shaw Neilson, L. H. Allen and the much younger McKellar and others of his generation, if partly inspired by classical tradition are no less truly Australian in spirit, while in Brian Vrepont's 'Grape Harvest' we see some synthesis of the two methods of expression.'
