  • Appeared in the Australian Home Companion in March 1860 with Kendall's lengthy note on the people of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), and an explanation of the native words used in the poem.
  • Author's note (Empire): 'Supposed to be sung by a native, over his dying chieftain.'
  • Appeared in the Empire in July 1860 titled 'A Death-Song of Tanna'.
