Contains poems and two stories. The subject matter mainly concerns colonial Australia as seen by a visitor and by new migrants, and religious themes.

Notes

  • Also contains prose, including two stories for young people (37pp).
  • The identity of this author has been disputed. Whereas the British Library catalogue attributes it to Lady Anne Wilson (q.v.), Percival Serle in his A Bibliography of Australasian Poetry and Verse (p.11) states that 'this book is sometimes attributed to Lady Wilson, sometimes to D C F Moodie. The internal evidence is strongly against either of these attributions and Lady Wilson has definitely stated that she did not write it'.
  • Author identified as 'Miss C. Perdiau, of Balmain, who is at present on a visit to England' in the Illustrated Sydney News 24 December 1881 (p.11).

Perdriau, of Balmain, who is at present on a visit to England, where, under the nom de plume of 'Austral', she has just published a little volume of graceful verse entitled, 'Lays from an Australian Lyre', which has been favourably received in the old country. The poems are of unequal merit, although generally marked by great taste and power of poetical expression.
