19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
British – American poet, writer, editor and lawyer, Kinahan Cornwallis (1839?-1917), author of Two Journeys to Japan, New El Dorado, and Howard Plunkett, or, Adrift in Life, presented his colonial travels in his two-volume Panorama of the New World. Cornwallis chronicled his travels from England to Australia, detailing the city of Melbourne in a somewhat convoluted manner. The work is interspersed with reproductions of local advertisements, mathematical workings, lists of ships departing, conversations he had, and information on famous figures. The first volume included an appendix on the settlement of Port Phillip. Cornwallis' second volume concentrated on the American colonies.
