19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Charles H. Eden (1839-1900) was a public servant, writer, and author of My Wife and I in Queensland (1872) An Eight Years' Experience in the Above Colony, with Some Account of Polynesian Labour. The Fifth Continent is a travel narrative that incorporated a historical and geographical account of the colonies. Eden prefaced the work by stating his endeavour was to provide a brief history of each colony with the latest information to date. The narrative is divided according to colony, detailing information on religion, flora, fauna, and Aboriginal peoples.
