19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Edward M. Curr (1820-1889), squatter and writer, and eldest son of Edward Curr (1798-1850), merchant and landholder, retrospectively presented his memoirs Squatting in Victoria from 1841 to 1851 (1883). In this work, Curr describes his experiences of Melbourne society, Sydney, bush and station life, the landscape, details of specific Aboriginal populations and customs (Curr states in his preface that he has "devoted his leisure hours for the last ten years to the collection of information from gentlemen resident in the bush on the subject of the aboriginal tribes" (v)), flora and fauna, "new chums," the climate, and his travels through the bush of Victoria.
