      • 'This little story was commenced with a somewhat indefinite purpose either as to its plot or characters. It was continued weekly in short chapters, written in haste by reason of pressure of other engagements, and the author did not anticipate that it would serve any purpose other than the occupying a portion of space in the modest periodical on whose front page is the playbill of the Theatre Royal. But the publisher of the "Programme" having decided to re-issue the story in a complete form as a Christmas Book, to meet the wishes of a good many persons who had read only portions of it and desired to read the whole, it is now re-issued accordingly, without any addition or material modification.'(p. 3)
