  • Anonymous and without title (the first poem is "The Ships of Shame"). In a letter of 30 July 1934 to Percival Serle which is tipped in the VSL copy, Bedford wrote: "Ships of Shame... there are half a dozen of these in existence. Edition was never bound - the unfolded sheets went up in Troedel's fire (about 1904). Sands & Mac... have bound four lots of the sheets that escaped. I'm not sorry it burned as there was much in the collection only to be excused by extreme truth. There are 2 copies in Brisbane and several more in Sydney and I'd like to see them burned as the main edition was. I am preparing a real book of verse for the press."
