The narrator's witty, eccentric and kind friend, Ned Lavender, sent him Christmas cards every year, and on rediscovery of these cards the narrator reminsicences about the man and his life. He discovers that Ned had loved the same woman as one of his friends, but had made a great sacrifice to ensure her happiness with the other man.
