Notes

  • Epigraph: Hark! I hear the tramp of thousands,/ And of armed men the hum;/ Lo! A nation's hosts have gathered/ Round the quick alarming drum,.../ Saying, "Come,/ Freeman, come!/ Ere your heritage be wasted," said the/ Alarming drum. - Bret Harte, 1870.
  • A work of fiction written in the form of correspondence between a soldier and his wife. E. Morris Miller's Australian Literature from its Beginnings to 1935 (1940): 738 comments: 'Comprising an Australian soldier's letters to his wife and hers to him from 1915 until his death in 1917..'
  • Republished as Arthur and Emily: letters in wartime. The editors of the republished edition used the original manuscript, believing it to be a record of an actual exchange of correspondence. They were unaware of the fact that it was fiction and had been published as such in 1918.
