Notes

  • Author's note: This poem is a sort of descendant of the 'singing matches' to be found in the Fourth and Fifth Idylls of Theocritus, Virgil's Third Eclogue, Spenser's 'June' in his Shepherd's Calendar -- from which I take the names of my two protagonists -- the First Pastoral of Pope, and the Shepherd's Week of John Gay. In all of these, however, the contending swains sing their loves.
