At Mass, the narrator meets a man with no fingers except his thumbs. He meets the man again later in a cafe. After serving him tea and observing his struggle with the hot teapot, they talk, and the man tells the story of how he lost his fingers climbing Mt Everest, to the narrator's great surprise.
