AbstractHistoryArchive Description

''There is no god,' I told him. Then I drove the syringe up into his nostril and straight through the side of his nose.' Joe Panther is a psychotic, alcoholic, violent, substance-abusing heroin dealer. He is also, he believes, Joshua Ben Pantera, born two thousand years ago, the son of Mary and the Lord God Yaweh Himself, not dead yet, the crucified Jesus: still around, abandoned by his Father, abused by the world, and as pissed off as hell.'

Notes

  • Dedication: For Sahm, as always./ And Jane./ And Alison./ And the angels of the West:/ Ms Greenwood and Ms Southgate.
  • Author's note: The city in this novel is seen through the eyes of its narrator. Best, then, to regard it as fiction. Any resemblance to persons living, dead or unsure is purely coincidental.
  • Epigraph: In the last days of the world false prophets and/ deceivers will abound,/ sheep will be perverted and turn into wolves,/ and love will turn to hate ... (The Didache (First Century CE))

If we were, for a moment, tempted to regard these/ records/ rather in the light of the nightmare ravings of a/ diseased brain,/ or the crazy imaginings of some narcotised wretch of/ over-weird/ humour, we should be quickly undeceived. (From the 1903 Preface to Tortures and Torments of the Christian Martyrs, Fr Antonio Gallonio (1591))

— Appears in: The Australian , 12 September 2012; (p. 17)
'Fans of Australian author Andrew Masterson's crime/horror fiction will have been delighted this week by news that a film version of his award-winning "The Second Coming" is almost ready to be made. In the more traditional funding world, last week Screen Australia announced a $5.5 million investment in three feature film projects, including one by Rolf de Heer in which the veteran filmmaker will collaborate with David Gulpilil. Called "Charlie's Country", it describes itself as "an uplifting tragicomic portrait of one man's struggle to define himself as an Aboriginal in modern Australia". The others are "Predestination", a science fiction/crime thriller by writer-director brothers Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) and is based on a story by sci-fi author Robert A. Heinlein; and "Wolf Creek 2", by director Greg Mclean.' Stephen Fitzpatrick.
