Notes

  • Prequel to Return to the High Country
  • Dedication: To my mother, Evelyn Margaret Parsons, who was thrilled that this book was on the way, but who did not live to see its publication.
  • Author's note: It was once suggested to me by a visiting American friend that I should write a work of fiction in which the working kelpie played a prominent role....In truth, this book is a blend of fact and fiction. There are names in it, surnames specifically, which are well-known in some country districts, but in no instance do such names represent any person, living or dead. Other things have been altered to suit the purposes of fiction, such as the size and procedures of the Merriwa Hospital. (vii-ix).
