Tearle and Dowd provide an overview of Farrell's life as a brewer, newspaper-man and poet. The composition, revision and reception of How He Died and Other Poems is discussed and some attention is paid to Farrell's patriotic verse. Farrell's "The Hymn of the Commonwealth" was sung by a chorus of a thousand voices at the Inauguration Ceremony of Federation.
