The Tribune was the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Australia. It was published weekly from 1939 to 1991. It had previously been published as The Australian Communist (1920-1921), The Communist (1921-1923) and the Workers' Weekly (1923-1939).
Subversive editions of the Tribune were published between 1940 and 1941 after the Communist Party was declared illegal by the Menzies-Fadden Government.
In 1943 the Tribune briefly absorbed Foreward, another Communist Party newspaper. The Queensland Guardian was also absorbed by the Tribune , initially between November 1954 and Apr. 1960. It then resumed as a separate publication until re-absorbed on January 1, 1967, along with the Guardian (Melbourne, Vic.)
