The Australian Star was a daily newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, by the Australian Newspaper Company from 1887 to 1909. The founding editor was W. H. Traill. Arthur Smyth was acting manager. The paper renamed The Star (with the subtitle 'The Australian Evening Daily') in 1909.
After the Australian Newspaper Company was acquired in 1910 by Star and Sun Ltd The Star was reborn as The Sun (1910-1988).
The Australian Star took a protectionist stance in its editorials. This position was make public in advertising for the first edition - 1 December 1887 (see Sydney Morning Herald 1 December 1887, p.10).
