Notes

  • Brisbane, 2nd December.
  • 'Written for The Queenslander.'
  • The Australian Town and Country Journal noted : 'Some dissatisfied nautical gentleman who has had perhaps some "experiences" with Australian Marine Boards, thus voices on behalf of himself and his brother mariners, the miseries that attend upon the skipper in Australian seas. The poet merely signs himself "Old Salt", and hails from Port Adelaide. Let us hope that, although "not wanted any more", he has a nice, easy shore billet in his old age.'
